In a certain village there
once lived a very poor man, who found it most difficult to
make both ends meet. So he began to steal; and though he got
plenty of money this way, he did not have peace of mind, however.
One day this thief met a Sadhu, who preached to him : Never
speak any untruth, and God will always help you. "But,
Maharaj, "I am a thief", the poor man confessed.
"How would I live if I started speaking the truth?"
"Don't worry about that" answered th Sadhu, "Have
faith in God, and still speak the truth." With this the
thief decided, that he would only speak the truth, and nothing
but the truth, from then on.
That night, as usual, when he was on his way to commit one
of his nightly robberies, the thief found himself confronted
by a passerby. "Who are you, and where are you going"
demanded the passerby. The thief was dewildered; he wondered
how he could avoid answering the question. Thought as he couldn't
and as he was determined to be honest, he replied "I
am on my way to steal, for I am a thief." The passerby
was amazed at this curious answer. He wondered that what sort
of a thief was this, who needs to openly announce his intentions.
So he answered. "In that case I will join you. We will
share equally what we steal."
The thief was only too pleased to agree to this with the result,
that the two soon reached the king's palace. The thief managed
to get into the palace, having his companion on guard at the
door. With great difficulty he managed to break open a safe,
in which he discovered three diamond necklaces. Helping himself
with two, the thief crept out and joined his companion. As
agreed, he handed over one necklace to him saying "Brother
there were three necklaces in the safe, but to avoid a dispute,
I stole any two. This one is therefore your share."
Next day the king called his treasurer and said to him "I
understand there was a thief in the palace last night. Let
me know what is missing." The treasurer made a search,
and soon came across the broken safe with two missing diamond
necklaces. However the treasurer was not a very honest man.
Thinking this an excellent chance to steal, he slyly pocketed
the third necklace. When he came before the king, he therefore
reported. "Sarkar, three necklaces from the safe are
missing ! Nothing else. But to his surprise the king shouted
"You rascal you have stolen the third necklace, for only
two were take." "But Sir ! stammered the treasurer,
giving himself away. How do you know about the third necklace?
"Because I was one of the thief, who stole them."
announced the king, to the treasurers greater amazement.
Threatened with punishment, the treasurer now returned the
necklace, upon which the king dismissed him at once sent for
the honest thief and appointed him treasurer in his place.
No doubt, the thief was astonished when he learnt the identity
of his accomplice. Thought from now on he was able to live
a completely honest life. |
